My love for the outdoors began about ten years ago, while I was living in Northern California. Most of my hiking experience includes day hikes, with an occasional 2-3 day backpacking trip. I'd consider myself a 4-season hiker and generally like to keep my pack as light as reasonably possible without spending a fortune. In 2007, I moved to New York City and have enjoyed East Coast hiking and experiencing the outdoors with four seasons. I enjoy hiking in all terrains, and have been fortunate enough to hike in a number of national and state parks, and several countries.

Product Description:

The Thermopolis XLT Headband is made of a patented technology by ASICS Corporation. The featured technology, Thermopolis® XP is described on the manufacturer's website as being made of a double layer of polyester offering soft comfort and warmth. The fabric of the headband is also advertised to be of a soft brushed interior fabric with four-way stretch. The label states that the composition of the fabric is 88% polyester and 12% spandex. There were no care instructions on the product or on the label.

The headband is also described as being designed in an anatomically correct way, which curves around the head for ear and forehead protection against bad weather.

Field Conditions and Use

I purchased this headband in November 2010 for my daily runs, which average slightly more than 5 miles, and occur 3-4 times a week. I was previously wearing a windproof, beanie style fleece hat, but found that this was making my head a little warm, so I was looking for something which allowed a little more breathability and air to circulate. The ASICS Thermopolis XLT headband has worked great for me so far. The fit is snug, the profile of the headband is small, with low bulk and it covers my ears, keeps my hair back, wicks the sweat off my forehead, and provides just enough warmth around my head for my runs which usually take 45-50 minutes, in temperatures from 26F (-3C) to 40F (4C). I have been running in light rain to light snowy conditions and the headband does a good job of not retaining any noticeable moisture from my sweat or the outside elements. The feel of the fabric against my skin is soft and has a fleece like feel.

There is also a reflective emblem on the front of the headband, which I suppose is good to help motorists see me as I am running through the streets of Manhattan.

Although the sizing claims to be one size fits all, the headband seems to fit me perfectly. The headband, when lying flat, measures 8.5 inches x 3.5 inches (22 cm x 9 cm). My forehead, at the widest part above my eyebrows, measures 21 inches (53 cm) in circumference. The material does allow for four-way stretching, but how far the stretching will go, will need to be determined by each user. I feel that the anatomical design seems to fit my head very well and I am very happy with the fit.

There were no care instructions that I could find on the product, or with the packaging it came in, but I have been hand washing the product after each use with mild detergent in warm to cold water and so far, the product seems to be holding up well.

    THINGS I LIKE
  1. Lightweight
  2. Breathable
  3. Wicks moisture
  4. Great snug fit allowing my head and ears to stay warm
    THINGS I DON'T LIKE
  1. Care instructions are lacking on the product and the packaging.
