Backpacking Background: I have been backpacking my whole life, all over Colorado and British Columbia.  I enjoy glacier, mountaineering, and ocean based backpacking trips.  I carry a 67 L pack; however I tend to pack lightweight gear.  I hike with groups of friends, and I try to cover as much distance and elevation as I can in a single day.  By the evenings, I like to cook hot meals, enjoy warm drinks, and relax under the stars in my hammock on clear nights.  When the weather gets more aggressive, I carry my freestanding tent.

Impressions

When I first took the Buff out of the package, I noticed how light and breathable it was.  My previous experience with the Buff brand has been with their winter line, which keeps the skin warm and dry in cold winters.  However, this product was much more lightweight and breathable than other similar products I have seen before. I also like how this product is made from recycled materials.  I always enjoy buying products that push toward a more sustainable future.

I quickly put the buff around my head, a favorite way that I like to use a Buff. It didn’t feel constricting on my skull, and I enjoyed the neutral, black colour.  The Buff was soft, and wasn't itchy like I expected it to be.  I am particularly interested to see if the Buff will keep me cool under my mountain bike helmet which often gets very hot and sweaty.

Quick Shots

Lightweight, breathable, true to colour

Summary

The Buff seems lightweight and breathable within my first trial.  I look forward to seeing if the Buff keeps me cool in the hot Whistler summers.  I am also interested in seeing if the Buff starts to smell after I wear it under my climbing and mountain biking helmets.

A big thanks to Buff and BackpackGearTest.org for the opportunity to test this lovely buff. Long term report to come in three months.
