LOCATION: Salida, Colorado, USA
GENDER: M
HEIGHT: 5' 11" (1.80 m)
WEIGHT: 200 lb (90.70 kg)
WAIST: 36 in (91 cm)

I started backpacking in Wisconsin as a youth, being involved in the Boy Scouts programs. As a young adult, I worked at a summer camp leading backpacking, canoeing and mountain biking trips. I now generally take short weekend or day trips in rough, mountainous terrain, although I have extensive experience in the upper Midwest as well. I take one or two longer trips each year, where I typically carry about 40 lb (18 kg). I prefer to be prepared and comfortable, but I have taken lightweight trips as well.

Product Description

The tasc Performance Boxer Briefs are underwear made of a blend of cotton, bamboo and synthetic materials.  The boxer briefs are form fitting but longer than traditional underwear, hence the boxer brief name!  The underwear has a 1.5 in (3.8 cm) waistband that has a horizontal line on the bottom and the top in a neon-green color.  The word "tasc" is repeated across the waistband as well.  The boxer briefs come only in black, which is just fine with me!  tasc stands for "Technical All Season Comfort."

The boxer briefs have flat stitching where the different panels of fabric meet, which is great.  There is an opening in the crotch that is typical of almost every pair of underwear I have ever owned.  At the top and bottom of the opening, the seams are reinforced with a neon-green thread.  On the inside of the boxer briefs there is the tasc logo and some product information imprinted in the rear. It actually refers to the style as a 6 in (15 cm) Boxer Brief.  The underwear is 14.5 in tall and 15.25 in wide (36.8 x 38.7 cm) with a 6 in (15.2 cm) inseam.  Also, it mentions that the underwear is designed in New Orleans, Louisiana, but is actually manufactured in India.

Field Use

I decided to try out the tasc Performance Boxer Briefs since I was intrigued by the use of bamboo as a fabric for underwear.  Since getting them, the underwear has been my primary underwear while backpacking and in many other sports activities.  I estimate that I have worn the underwear on approximately 9  overnight backpacking trips and another 10 day hikes, in addition to an occasional mountain bike ride here and there.  My hiking and backpacking takes me high up in the Colorado Rockies, often over 14,000 ft (4,267 m) where temperatures can dip to -15 F (-26 C) or lower not including wind-chill factor and with highs near 80 F (27 C).

General Impressions

I have to admit, I was very skeptical when I first got these boxer briefs.  However the one thing that was immediately apparent was just how comfortable these are!  The best way that I can describe the feel is that they are as soft as cotton, with an almost silk-like sheen.  All of my other performance underwear is made primarily of synthetic material so this is a very welcome relief!  One thing that is great about this product is that it doesn't stretch out during a hike.  At the end of the day, the underwear is still as, um, "supportive" as when I first put them on!  After washing, the briefs maintain their shape with no noticeable shrinking.

Another attribute I look for is how well the underwear wicks away perspiration.  I would like to say that these do as good of a job and perhaps even better than my other pairs.  Even during some of my winter trips, I don't notice a chill when I settle down due to excess perspiration.  One thing that I struggle with boxer briefs is a tendency for the fabric to ride up my legs and bunch up.  These briefs still do, but perhaps less so than other pairs I have worn.

The durability of the fabric so far has not been an issue whatsoever.  The seams look solid with no signs of wear up to this point.  The waistband is remarkably intact.  Even more so considering how I much I have worn them!  The briefs don't retain any odor that I can detect and remain as easy on my bottom as the day I got them.

Summary

My backside is forever grateful for the tasc Boxer Briefs.  I'll continue to wear them in my outdoor adventures for the foreseeable future!

Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Moisture wicking is excellent
  • Comfy fabric
Cons:
  • Legs ride up a little, but not excessively
