GSI Outdoors Infinity Bowl
Owner Review by Andrea Murland

Tester Information

Name: Andrea Murland
Email: amurland AT shaw DOT ca
Age: 26
Location: Elkford & Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada
Gender: Female
Height: 5 ft 2 in (1.57 m)
Weight: 125 lb (57 kg)

I began hiking frequently in 2006 and have since hiked in Western Canada, Australia, and spent two months backpacking in the Alps. I spend most weekends either day-hiking or on 2 to 3 day backpacking trips, with some longer trips when I can manage them. I also snowshoe and ski in the winter, but don’t have a lot of experience with winter in the backcountry yet. Elevation is typically 500-3,000 m (1,600-10,000 ft), in the Canadian Rockies and the Selkirk, Purcell, and Monashee ranges. I try for a light pack, but I don’t consider myself a lightweight backpacker.

Description

The GSI Outdoors Infinity Bowl is a clear polypropylene bowl for camping. The manufacturer indicates that the Infinity polypropylene is BPA-free, will not absorb food odors, will not leach chemicals into food, and is dishwasher safe. Writing on the bottom of the bowl indicates that it shouldn’t be microwaved, though.

Field Conditions

The GSI Outdoors Infinity Bowl has been my backpacking bowl since I purchased it in the spring of 2009. I have used it for an estimated 20 meals since then. It has been washed in lakes, streams, and at home in the sink, with soap, sand, and gravel.

Review

The Infinity Bowl is a perfectly functional, lightweight bowl and it has served me well. It is large enough to hold a good serving of oatmeal at breakfast or pasta at dinner. It fits comfortably in one hand if I’m not eating at a table.

The bowl is slightly scratched from being hauled around, eaten out of, and washed, but otherwise appears to be in great shape. The material does flex slightly, so I have no concerns about breakage in my pack. I usually pack the bowl in my food bag, in the middle of my pack, with bits of food stuffed inside it.

Washing the bowl is easy, as food doesn’t seem to stick to it. I try not to let my dishes dry out dirty, so I’ve never had a problem getting food off. I have noticed that food with a bit of greasiness seems to leave a film on the surface of the bowl, but a quick swipe with a handful of gravel or sand and it’s gone, and the film washes away with soap when I get home.

Oatmeal on a messy morning Summary

The GSI Outdoors Infinity Bowl is a simple, lightweight bowl that serves me well as my primary backpacking tableware. I anticipate many more years of use from my bowl.

Thumbs Up:
Lightweight
Good size for a meal
Slightly flexible

Thumbs Down:
Film from greasier food
