I have more than 20 years of backpacking experience. Day hikes and 2-3 day backpacking trips take place on most weekends throughout the year while longer trips are only occasional. I backpack predominantly in mountain terrain (Coast Range, Cascades and Canadian Rockies) with the goal of summiting peaks. Activities I use my gear with include mountaineering, ski touring, rock climbing, kayaking, biking, trail running, Search and Rescue and overseas travel. I like my gear to be reasonably light, convenient and simple to use though I would not claim to be a lightweight hiker.

DESCRIPTION & FEATURES

I received two products by Sven Can See. The first is the Anti-Fog Gel Spray, which came with a lens cloth. It is said to be a four season fog solution intended for use on safety glasses, sunglasses, visors, goggles, masks and hunting & shooting glasses. The ingredients are biodegradable, odor free and non-toxic, though it doesn't say what they actually are. The manufacturer's website says it will do for most conditions, but the second product I received would better suit extreme cold climates. This product is called Anti-Fog/ Anti-Frost Gel Spray. Both products are delivered in a pen-like container and they are the same size, though the contents have slightly different volumes. The pen-like container is topped with a spray nozzle that pushes down to spray the gel, which comes out more like a liquid. There are warnings on both that say to 'Keep out of reach of children' and don't use on contact lenses. If for some reason I get the solution in my eye, I have been directed to flush my eyes with fresh water. Medical attention is warranted if I swallow the solution or if eye irritation continues.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS & TRYING IT OUT

I'm impressed by the simplicity of the pen-like spray applicator. It gives the impression that it is easy to travel with and is convenient for applying. After further exploring of the manufacturer's website I have a much better understanding of how I should be using the gel sprays. The website provides both written and video instruction. I was surprised to see that I'm supposed to apply only one spray (drop) of gel and use that for all four lens sides of one pair of glasses or goggles. I was also surprised that the application was to be done with my fingers and not a lens cloth. I was afraid of adding finger prints by doing this, but after waiting 10 minutes following smearing with my fingers, I was instructed to use a lens cloth or something similar to remove any excess solution and do one final buff, which of course eliminated any possible finger prints. I noted at this time that room temperature application and waiting for 10 minutes were important instructions to get the best results. Now that I know all the rules, I feel confident that I can apply this quickly and efficiently. I'm interested to see if it will hold anti-fog for a whole day excursion so that I would only need to apply it once at home before I head out.

SUMMARY

So far my first impression of these two Sven Can See products is that the pen-like applicators are convenient to use and easy to pack. I'm hoping that the anti-fog solution need only be applied just once for the day. I'm also interested in finding out how well they will work when applied in cold weather, since when I'm overnight in the backcountry I may not have the opportunity to apply at 'room temperature'. I must say I enjoyed the video instructions and website information and feel confident that I'll be using the products as intended. Over the next few months I will be using them for skiing (downhill, alpine touring and cross-country), snow-mobiling, hiking and scuba diving. I will provide an update of my field testing in a few months.

Long Term Report - June 28, 2017

FIELD CONDITIONS

I have mainly been using the Anti-Fog spray gel as by the time these arrived our cold snap had more or less ended. I used the Xtreme version only once for a temperature that was about -5 C (23 F). Early in the season we had long periods of  -26 C (-15 F) and below that would have been great to try, but we never did plunge that low again. During the past four months I had the chance to use the Anti-Fog spray gel on two 3 day backcountry ski touring trips, a 3 day backcountry snowshoe trip, a 3 day hiking and scrambling trip with snow shoes and trail crampons, a 3 day hiking trip and a few day hikes and scrambles. I've also used the Ant-Fog spray gel on a snorkeling mask in the tropics while on a 10 day vacation and a number of road cycling and mountain biking excursions. Another use was for eye protection during a two day ground search task for Search & Rescue. Temperatures for the Anti-Fog spray gel ranged from -5 C to 32 C (23 F to 90 F). Weather encountered included every season including rain, hail, sleet, wet and heavy snow, gale force winds and beautiful calm sunny days.

PERFORMANCE IN THE FIELD

First of all the gel sprays are packaged in highly convenient pen-like containers, which makes them very easy to travel with. The gel spray was easy to use. One squirt was enough to spread easily over all front and back lenses of one pair of glasses. After 10 minutes of leaving it on, it would form a dried film that needed to be buffed out with a cloth. I was concerned that the room temperature instructions wouldn't be convenient for overnights in the winter. However, as I was mainly in backcountry huts with wood heating, this was never an issue. Not only that, I found that if I put it on once before the weekend it would last for the duration of a three day trip. As mentioned above, the temperatures warmed up after I got these and as such I didn't have much use for the Xtreme version. However, the one time I did use it in -5 C (23 F) I had very positive results. For both, I can say that it reduced the amount of fogging experienced. The only time it would fog is when doing strenuous exercise and then stopping. My glasses fogged up briefly when stopped and as soon as I moved the fog immediately cleared up. I even tried one day just using the gel spray on only one lens. This really showed me how effective it was. The lens that didn't have the Anti-fog gel was constantly fogging up, while the treated lens only fogged briefly and seemed to be self clearing.

On the other hand the Anti-fog gel was not effective for my snorkel mask in the tropics. The first time I put my head underwater it worked, but as soon as I took the mask off or adjusted it, letting the sea water on it, the Anti-fog gel was immediately washed away and rendered ineffective. My dive instructor was skeptical telling me to just spit in my mask. Unfortunately he was right. However, for all other applications not underwater, it was successful. Eye protection, sunglasses and ski goggles were all effective.

SUMMARY

Overall, I am very impressed with the Anti-fog gel sprays. They exponentially reduced the amount of  fogging of sunglasses, clear eye protection glasses for search and rescue and my ski goggles. I would highly recommend this product for any of these applications. The only application I would not use it with is for underwater sports such as diving or snorkeling.

Likes
- Small convenient packaging
- Reduces fogging with strenuous exercise
- Applicable to sunglasses, clear eye protective glasses, ski-goggles

Dislikes
- Doesn't work for snorkel and dive masks
