Smelly Proof Storage Bags
Test Series by Andrea Murland

Initial Report - May 23, 2019
Long Term Report - expected Sept 2019

Tester Information

Name: Andrea Murland
Email: amurland AT shaw DOT ca
Age: 33
Location: Elkford, British Columbia, Canada
Gender: Female
Height: 5 ft 2 in (1.57 m)
Weight: 130 lb (59 kg)

I began hiking frequently in 2006 and have since hiked in Western Canada, Australia, Europe, and Nepal. I spend most weekends either day-hiking or on 2-3 day backpacking trips, with some longer trips when I can manage them. I also snowshoe and ski in the winter, and prefer to be hut-based for overnight trips. Elevation is typically 500-3,000 m (1,600-10,000 ft), in the Canadian Rockies and the Selkirk, Purcell, and Monashee ranges. I try for a light pack, but I don’t consider myself a lightweight backpacker.

Description & Initial Impressions

All of the Smelly Proof bags that I received are clear plastic, though their website indicates that black bags are also available. The packaging indicates that they are BPA-free, FDA approved, and made in the United States. Each bag has the Smelly Proof logo in green on it, and the heavy duty bags are also stamped as such.

The bags seal with a double zipper seal. Some of the bags have green zippers and some clear. Above the zipper on the size medium and larger are tear notches. The website indicates that the bags can be used for heat or vacuum sealing and then torn open.

The bags themselves feel quite sturdy. The material feels like it will withstand some abuse, and the closed edges have an approximately 10 mm (0.4 in) wide welded edge. The top of the bags, above the zipper seal, is easy to grab to separate the zipper. The heavy duty bags are a noticeably thicker material.
The storage bags

Summary

The Smelly Proof bags look like a sturdy, well-sealing option for food storage. Time will tell how they keep odours inside! I am looking forward to getting my backpacking food into the smaller bags, and also cooking/eating out of the bags. I anticipate using the larger bags for grouping food together in my pack.

Thanks to Smelly Proof and BackpackGearTest.org for the chance to keep my pack odour-free this year. Check back in a few months to see how I’ve been packing food this summer!
