Product Information Manufacturer: Clif Bar & Co. Year of Manufacture: 2007 Made In: U.S.A. URL: http://www.lunabar.com/ MSRP: N/A Flavours: Lime-ade and Pink Grapefruit Listed Weight: 23 g (0.8 oz) for one single serve packet Actual Weight: 25 g (0.9 oz) for one single serve packet INITIAL REPORT Date: January 20, 2008 Item Received: January 16, 2008 I received four single serving packages of the LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash, two of each flavour. The packaging opens at the top left hand corner via a small cut line. The LUNA Sport literature enclosed with the package and the packaging outlines the following features for the Electrolyte Splash:
The LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash is designed to provide optimum carbohydrates and electrolytes for energy requirements during a workout. It also helps with hydration and provides vitamins and minerals needed for workouts. It is recommended to consume one packet every 30 to 60 minutes of activity. One packet of Electrolyte Splash is enough for 0.47 L (16 oz) of cold water. Both flavours contain 80% organic ingredients. I plan on consuming the Electrolyte Splash as recommended by the manufacture during activity. Activities I will consume the electrolyte splash during hiking, running, snowshoeing, snowboarding and gym based workouts. I will be checking on the taste, texture, ease of use, and appropriateness to the activity while consuming the Electrolyte Splash. Since there is such a limited amount of product to test, I didn't taste test the Electrolyte Splash for the initial report. I will be saving them to use in my upcoming activities over the next few weeks. FIELD REPORT Date: March 25, 2008 About 2 weeks after the first batch of LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash arrived, another package came from the manufacturer with an additional 4 packages of individual serving packages in each flavour for a total of 12 packages of product. Yay! All were consumed over the past two months. I used the LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash to keep hydrated while working out in the gym, skiing, and snowshoeing over the past two months. The gym workouts were 45 minutes to 1 hour. The skiing and snowshoeing were from 1-3 hours long. I didn't keep track of the mileage as we were meandering along trails that weren't necessarily marked and sometimes making our own trails. Preparing the LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash: Each package contains enough Electrolyte powder to mix with 234 ml (8 oz) of a beverage. The manufacturer recommends consuming one package mixed with water every 30-60 minutes. In order to open the package, I had to cut the top as there is no tear tab and the packaging is made from some sort of plastic-like paper that I could not tear. I've mixed the powder both in a cup by stirring with a spoon and in an aluminum or stainless steel bottle by shaking vigorously. Shaking in the bottle was quicker, but both achieved the same results. The powder mixed easily with water. I did have to shake my bottle or swirl the cup a bit when I got closer to the end of the drink so that the liquid would keep the same concentration throughout. Consuming the LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash: I have to admit, I am not the most well hydrated person; i.e. I don't drink enough water. The 8 - 237 ml (8 oz) glasses a day rule is not something I follow, I'm more of a 'drink it when I'm thirsty' kind of person. I also admit I have been a victim of self induced post workout headaches because I haven't drank enough liquids during exercise. The Pink Grapefruit Flavour: I haven't found an electrolyte replacement drink yet that I truly enjoy... as in relishing the thought of having a drink of something I find really satisfying. The LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash Pink Grapefruit flavour almost turned me off of their product altogether right from the start. It was the first package I prepared for use during a workout session at the gym. I wasn't far into the workout when I took the first drink. It was quite unpleasant and didn't get any better as the workout progressed. At this point I was really wondering how I would get through the next 5 packages of the stuff! The next time I used the drink was on a snowshoe outing. The trail I was travelling on was challenging with a lot of hills. The Pink Grapefruit was a bit more tolerable this time and seemed to get more so the thirstier I got. This trend continued on the remainder of the outings I drank the Pink Grapefruit flavour: it was horrible tasting if I took a swig when first starting out, but as I continued to exert myself the flavour became more tolerable. The Lime-Aide Flavour: The LUNA Sport Electrolyte Splash Lime-Aide flavour I used exclusively on outdoor outings cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. I didn't mind the flavour, even when taking a hesitant sip to check out the taste after mixing it up in my kitchen before heading out. As I experienced with the Pink Grapefruit flavour, the flavour would improve the thirstier I got on the trail. After about 30 minutes of exertion, the Lime-Aide was quite enjoyable, especially as it got colder in my stainless steel bottle on the outside of the pack. After consuming the Electrolyte Splash during activity I felt refreshed and didn't experience any dehydration symptoms. I didn't feel the need to guzzle a bunch of water when I came home after my outings, which I have experienced in the past. The recommended amount of 1 package per 30-60 minutes is a good guideline. Summary: I've always thought of electrolyte replacement drinks as something to consume if I was running a marathon or biking a 'tour'. I am now a convert. I will continue to use an electrolyte replacement drink to make my exercise or activity more enjoyable and improve recovery time. I would definitely consider buying the Lime-Aide flavour on a regular basis as an electrolyte replacement drink, but I will be leaving the Pink Grapefruit flavour on the shelf. Things I Liked: The Lime-Aide flavour Feeling well hydrated after exercise The easy mixing of the product Things I Didn't Like: The Pink Grapefruit flavour No tear tab on the packaging This concludes my Field Report.
