Biography:
I started
backpacking
in 1995 when I moved to Washington State. Since then, I have
backpacked in all seasons and conditions. I am currently getting into
condition to summit some of the
higher peaks in Washington, Oregon, and California. I normally use a
tarp/tent or hammock for shelter. My current base weight is around 17
lb (8 kg), not including consumables.

Description:RX
Protein bars are energy and/or meal replacement bars made from just a
few simple ingredients. To use their own words "Simple ingredients no
BS" The wrapper of each bar lists the couple of ingredients (often only
3) and the words "no BS." The RXBAR line includes a number of different
flavors, and while I have tried most, and like all of the ones I have
tried, this review is on my favorite the Chocolate Sea Salt flavor. The
cover of the package clearly displays the ingredients: 3 egg whites, 6
almonds, 4 cashews, and 2 dates.
Nutrition facts as listed on
the package: Serving size 1 bar (52g), Calories 210, Total fat 9g,
Cholesterol 0g, Sodium 260g, Total Carbohydrate 23g, Protein 12g

Use:
- I
have used and/or carried RXBAR's on many day hikes/snowshoe trips
(as lunch, a snack, or often just as a part of my 10 Essentials). I
have used it on many multi day backpacking trips, mostly in the Central
Cascade mountains of Washington, mainly for breakfast, and sometimes
lunch or snack. I have used it for lunch at least a few times for
Nordic skiing (Ski Patrol), forestalling the need to return to the yurt
for lunch (staying out of the buildings was part of our 2020-21 season
Covid protocols). I also carry these bars for travel and find them to
be an excellent snack or meal replacement at home.
I
have tried many different energy, protein and meal replacement bars
over the years. The RXBAR is the only one I really consider suitable as
a meal replacement. I was introduced to RXBARS when I was trying out a
low carb high protein diet. I immediately liked them and found them to
be the only bar I have tried that I would truly consider a meal
replacement. I immediately though about how well they would work for
backpacking. After some trials, I found that one RXBAR was sufficient
for me as a breakfast and for most trips kept me satisfied until lunch.
For some more strenuous days I do sometimes the need to supplement it
with a mid-morning snack. I have also used these as a lunch, but for
reasons I still don't quite understand I prefer not to. I would note
prior to switching to the RXBARS my breakfast of choice would be
oatmeal (quick oats not the instant) or cream of wheat, with nuts, or
fruit or sometimes brown sugar/cinnamon. Not only do I find the RXBAR
to be more satisfying than those alternatives, since it requires no
cooking it saves me time/effort in the morning. Or maybe more
importantly allows me to dedicate my hot water to something absolutely
essential: coffee.
Funny story: Many years ago I decided to pack
nothing but one particular well-known brand of energy bar for a 4-day
backpacking trip. While I survived, and had no real problems, I can not
eat those bars to this day. While I have not tried this with the RXBAR,
I think it would take more than 4 days for me to get sick of these. And
a lot more before I simply could not eat them at all.
One of the
things that I like about the RXBAR is its texture. It is dense enough
to provide a very satisfying chew, but not so dense or sticky that it
is difficult to chew or get out of my teeth. I would describe these as
begin someplace between a brownie and taffee. Some of the bars have
additional texture such as nut pieces, and the Chocolate Sea Salt
actually has bits of rock salt, which I enjoy. I find it to be more
satisfying if my food bar is something I can put some effort into
chewing, but not crunchy or dry, and I am not a fan of the ones that
are sticky/taffy like, causing me to spend a lot of time trying to get
the remainders out of my teeth. In addition, while the bar will get
hard when frozen, it's texture is not as temperature dependent as some
other products making is suitable for 4 session use. I really dislike
the ones that get really soft (some even almost liquid) if I carry them
in a pocket during the summer, and those same ones are often as hard as
rock when they get cold.
I have found at least a few main
flavors of RXBARS available at many grocery and some convenience
stores, and the price can carry significantly by location and over
time. While I tend to prefer this flavor I sometimes find the variety
pack (6 different flavors) can be a better bargain. Since I do like all
the flavors in the variety pack this is a good option and helps keep me
from getting tired of just eating the one flavor.
The varity
pack contains the following flavors: Peanut Butter, Chocolate Sea
Salt, Blueberry, Mixed Berry, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Coconut Chocolate
