Backpacking Background: I've been backpacking for several years. I have tested a lot of different systems to find what works the best for me. I pack as light as possible without sacrificing comfort and functionality. I enjoy backpacking in all kinds of weather including winter. I also do snowshoeing and year-round mountaineering. I backpack in the Rocky Mountains just below treeline most of the time. My trips are normally at least a few miles (5 km) or more. Anytime I can get out and enjoy the mountains, even for a day hike, I do.

Other details: Per the Vasque website, these boots are designed for winter hiking. Vasque claims to use an Ultradry waterproofing system consisting of 1.8 mm (0.070 in) waterproof leather. They also claim that the boots are insulated with 400 g (14 oz) of 3M Thinsulate Ultra Insulation inside of a fleece collar lining. The boots have a molded rubber heel kick and toe cap as well. The boots are also equipped with a handy gaiter D ring in the front of the laces. As far as the sole goes, the manufacturer website claims to use a Dual Density EVA foot bed with an EVA midsole and TPU shank, and the outsole being Vasque Venture technology which includes a ColdHold Compound that is claimed to adhere to cold surfaces for extra traction.

FIELD USE

I have used these boots on at least ten trips, most of the trips being overnight camping trips. I have used the boots in snowy and cold weather down to as low as -10 F (-23 C) and have used them in deep powder snow and on packed snow and ice. I have used the gaiters with the boots and have used the boots while snowshoeing as well. I have hiked on several short trips around 1 mile (1.6 km) and also have used them on longer trips around 4 miles (6.4 km).

MY EXPERIENCE

I love these boots. It is so nice to stand around camp with very little body activity and still have warm feet! These boots have been waterproof and dry for me. They are also very warm and comfortable whether hiking or just standing around camp. The leather is hard and durable and all lacing and stitching is very durable in my experience. The boots have a very strong and rugged feel to them when hiking or kicking around ice. The tread has also held up very well and is strong. The gaiter ring is durable and the gaiters have stayed tight every time when I have used them with these boots. The toe and heel guard also give the boots some extra protection and have remained tough and durable. The boots have a strong pull loop on the heel which is fastened on well. I did notice that when I first got the boots they were a little tight to get on (especially when getting out of my tent on the cold mornings), but after a few trips, they've loosened up around the ankle and go on quite easy. I also really like the way the boots look, being a darker color with little colorful accents here and there. I especially like the look of the metal grommets for the laces. They almost give the boots a little bit of a military look. I have no complaints regarding these boots.

THINGS I LIKE

Warm
Dry
Comfortable
Rugged feel and appearance.

THINGS I DON'T LIKE

Nothing really.

SUMMARY

Overall, I love these boots. I have used them on many trips and so far really don't have any complaints about them. I hope they will continue to hold up for me.
