PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock is waterproof, sweatproof, rub-resistant, PABA free, non-comedogenic, lightly fragranced and has both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) protection. (I learned this good mnemonic from the packaging on one of my Neutrogena sunblock products that helps me remember which light is causing which skincare problem: UVA is for Aging and UVB is for Burning.) The addition of powdered silica keeps it from feeling greasy on skin.

FIELD USE CONDITIONS
I have used Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock on my face and arms every day for the past three years or so. Most often, I put it on in the morning, ride my bike to school through the morning fog and only see the sun while eating my lunch outside. However, I have used this same sunblock while working outdoors, dayhiking, backpacking, kayaking, biking and outrigger canoeing. I have used it at altitudes from sea level to 11,000 ft (3,350 m), on cloudy to sunny days, in temperatures ranging from below freezing to 110 F (43 C), and in dry to extremely humid conditions.

FIELD USE RESULTS
At home or on the trail, I start my day by putting on Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock. It is my absolute favorite sunblock because it is far less greasy than any other lotion sunblock I have used. I still have to rub it in like a lotion, which I dislike, but I need the sun protection and this sunblock feels infinitely better than any other spray, gel or lotion sunblock I have tried on my face.

This sunblock isn't cheap, and I probably should be using a cheaper sunblock on my arms, but I really don't like getting thick, greasy sunblock all over my hands, even if I'm near a sink to wash them off. The Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock is less offensive feeling, though I do make sure to wash it off of my hands right away, too. Though I always start the day with a layer of Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, I sometimes reapply using a spray-on sunblock to avoid having the lotion on my hands. However, when I do reapply with Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock while on the trail, the sunblock is light enough that I can rub my hands on my pant legs to get rid of most of the nasty lotion feel on my hands. Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock is therefore my sunblock of choice for backpacking. Besides being non-greasy feeling, I like that I can bring just a small amount of the sunblock in a smaller resealable container, rather than carrying the entire tube. But I usually bring the whole thing anyway. One downside of this sunblock, and any lotion sunblock for that matter, is that I have a difficult time using it on my dog, compared with a spray-on sunblock. He has very short hair and sunburns easily, so I need to bring a separate spray-on sunblock for him when we're hiking sunny trails.

I like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock so much that I keep bottles of SPF 30 and SPF 45 in every bathroom of the house, in my bedroom, in my car, in my backpack and in my desk, just in case I need to reapply. I prefer the SPF 30 because the SPF 45 does feel slightly heavier and stickier, but I do use the SPF 45 when I expect to see more sun. I have yet to try the new SPF 55 or SPF 70 Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunblocks.

PROS
  • Non-greasy!!!
  • High SPF, both UVA and UVB protection
  • Non-offensive light fragrance
CONS
  • Expensive
  • Reapplication on the trail means getting sunblock on my hands (unlike spray sunblocks)
  • Doesn't work as well as a spray-on sunblock for the dog
