Background:I’ve been hiking since ’65 with occasional backpacking trips (backpacking became a love affair in the early 80’s). My first sleeping bag weighed in at 8 lb (3.6 kg) by itself! These days my loaded pack only weighs about 15 lb (6.8 kg) sans food. While most of my adventures are in the Northeast I’ve also been spending a good deal of time in the desert Southwest and most places in-between. My trips tend be in the cooler months - September through May - as I’m not much of a hot-weather person.

Product Description

The Cotopaxi Teca Cotton Face Mask is made of 100% tightly woven repurposed cotton (double layer per CDC) and can be worn with either side out. The mask is machine washable and can be machine dried. It has cotton ear loops and a wire through the top so it can be adjusted to fit the nose. One side is imprinted with the words “Do Good”, while the other side contains an image of Cotopaxi’s logo, a llama.

Usage Report

Since receiving the Cotopaxi Teca Cotton Face Mask I have worn it almost daily. I have taken it through TSA checkpoints, airports, flights, in taxis, hospitals, and general stores. I have passed through all of these places without being challenged about the efficacy of the face mask, nor its positioning on my face (the ear loops and wire hold it in place), I can’t say this about all of the masks I’ve worn, especially those given out for free from stores.

For the most part I find the mask comfortable to wear, and have not had difficulties breathing in temperatures ranging from 3F - 65F (-16C to 18C), in the dry deserts of Arizona or the humid forests of Pennsylvania. I’ve worn it during outside (sanctioned) events while raining and it held up well without getting soggy from the rain (that can hamper breathing).

I have washed and dried it in machines according to the instructions on Cotopaxi’s website (machine wash cold, tumble dry low), it has not faded, the material seems as fresh as new. The nose adjustment wire still works, even though it has been bent several times as I switch from one side to the other and back.

The only issue that I have, and it is not unique to the Teca Cotton Face Mask, is that I have psoriasis on the back of the ears, if the mask is not properly adjusted for a loose fit then it rubs the skin enough to bother me, at which point I have to switch to a gator-style mask. I will say that the soft cotton the ear loops are made of are not as irritating as the elastic loops on other masks. The ear loops are adjustable via a rubber slide that can be moved to make the loops larger or smaller, I make them larger than they would normally need to be. Even at this larger size I do not have a problem with them falling off of my ears, or the nose part dropping down off of the nose.

Summary

The Cotopaxi Teca Cotton Face Mask fits nicely, is very comfortable on the face and while breathing, and the colors are pleasing. As an aside, I find that when I wear them outside in the cold the reflected breath does help to keep the covered parts of my face warm.

  • Things I like:
    • Warm when worn outside in cold temps.
    • Comfortable when breathing.
    • Stays in place.

  • Things I don't like:
    • If not adjusted properly the ear loops do rub my psoriasis.
