Initial Report

Product Description

The ISIS Slipstream Jacket (or "the jacket") is a down-filled jacket made for women. This jacket is the hoodless version; ISIS makes a longer version of the Slipstream with a hood.

The chambers containing the down are arranged in long waves across the back and front of the jacket, even around the sleeves. The down seems to be evenly distributed and to adequately fill the chambers so there are no gaps. The inside of the collar is lined with soft gray velvet. The draft flap down the front of the jacket is printed with stars similar to the one in the ISIS logo. I received the jacket in "Vista," a shiny brilliant blue with a darker gray lining. The zipper pulls on the pockets have a clear center with the ISIS star in them, and the front zipper pull has the ISIS logo itself.

The jacket is described as being made of downproof, anti static, water resistant polyester ripstop. The inside security pocket is made of mesh, with a snowflake pattern around the earphone portal. The hand pockets are listed as having invisible zippers, and indeed, I didn't notice the zippers at first - the openings are in line with vertical seams on the jacket front.

The care instructions are printed on the lining. After securing all zippers, the jacket should be washed in warm water with mild detergent using the gentle cycle. Bleach or fabric softeners should be avoided, as should dry cleaning or ironing. The jacket should then be dried on low with clean tennis balls "to fluff up the down."

The Slipstream arrived in perfect condition - no loose threads, blemishes or rips in fabric. The jacket fits me snugly, and if I were less pear-shaped and more slender, it would probably conform to my figure better and extend over my hips.

I wore the jacket for four days before Christmas, around town. It's been raining and cold for a week here in the Central Valley. I've noticed that after wearing it in a light rain (between the front door and the car) water beads on the fabric of the jacket. While I wouldn't want to try wearing it in sustained heavier rainfall, it's encouraging that water doesn't immediately soak into the fabric. I've also noticed some down leaking here and there along the seams on the jacket after wearing it, but it doesn't seem to be excessive. The jacket is warm and comfortable so far, even on cold 28 F (-2 C) mornings trying to get ice off the windshield of my car.

So far, I have very little to dislike about the jacket; finding bits of down along the seams is somewhat concerning. I like the color of the jacket, and the fabric is comfortable against my skin, especially the velvet collar. I will be taking the Slipstream jacket backpacking and on snowshoe day trips. I'm looking forward to staying warm on chilly days.

Thanks to ISIS and BackpackGearTest.org for the opportunity to test the Slipstream Jacket. Please come back in two months when I post my Field Report.
