SUMMARY

Over the course of the six-month testing period, the Smartwool Microweight Fitted T saw extensive use across a wide variety of activities. The shirt could easily be called "well loved." In addition to loose threads at various hem lines reported during the field-testing phase, the shirt exhibited signs of wear and tear toward the end of the test period. However, I do not think this was unusual for the amount of and variety of activities to which the shirt was subjected. The shirt was soft and comfortable, with none of the itchiness often associated with wool. It wicked perspiration well, dried quickly and did not hold onto odors excessively. The Smartwool Microweight Fitted T was a great base layer, especially for endurance activities like backpacking.

FIELD CONDITIONS

In addition to the conditions the shirt was subjected to during the field-testing period, the shirt has additionally been used in the following conditions:

  • Hot, humid conditions, including temperatures in the 90s F (32+ C)
  • Persistent rain
  • Cool, dry evenings
  • Early fall, chilly weather (35 degrees F [10 degrees C])

EXTENDED IMPRESSIONS

The most important question I hoped to answer during the long-term phase of this test was regarding the overall durability of the T. Specifically, I was interested in whether the loose seam threads would eventually unravel and whether the shirt would develop any worn areas.

Despite repeated washings, the loose, fraying seams did not unravel further during long-term testing. However, the shirt did develop some worn-through areas. Three tiny holes have been found on the shirt, which do not appear to be at any particular stress points.

Additionally, a hole/wear area appeared on the edge of one of the arm hems.

These holes may well have been associated with bushwhacking through thorny areas. However, it must also be noted that I found the holes after a washing and not immediately following a bushwhacking episode.

I do not believe these holes represent any flaw or lack of durability on this shirt's part. This shirt was used extensively during the testing period, and much more aggressively than the casual backpacker might use it. I estimate it was worn during at least 60 days and was probably washed at least 20 times during the testing period.

Overall, I am very pleased with the Smartwool Microweight Fitted T.

BACKPACKING EXPERIENCE
I've hiked and car camped all my life, mostly in Michigan, but also in South Dakota, New England, Kentucky, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, and more. I have been backpacking since 2002. I put in extensive mileage day hiking and trail running with a pack, as I train for ultramarathons and adventure racing events. I have competed in both sprint- and expedition-length adventure races and gone as far as the 50-mile distance in ultramarathoning. I have day hiked from rim to rim in the Grand Canyon and am scheduled to do a Grand Canyon yo-yo in October, 2006.
