My mother introduced me to backpacking when I was in the backpack. I in good turn joined the Boy Scouts to get away from Mom on the weekend hikes. My first backpack trip with the Boy Scouts was down a dirt road to a park and campsite. That was my last trip with the Boy Scouts. Since then I have been backpacking mostly in the Sierra Nevada. I have been a professional river guide and kayak instructor for the last 11 years; however, I currently work at a family establishment in Bakersfield, California. Working a “Real Job” keeps me away from the outdoors a bit more than I would like. My summers are busy between city work and river guiding. Much of my packing is done on the river in the summer. This has driven me to long winter trips and short summer trips for the last several years. I took up snowshoeing to help get into winter packing. I have found that less is often more in my backpacking and my summer trips I find myself as happy in a pair of Chacos carrying my pocket knife as I do with a heavy pack and big boots.
For the last six months I have been wearing the Macabi Skirt. I wear the Macabi Skirt all over the place. I wear it whenever I go hiking, I wear it around the house I wear it all the time. (O.K. I don't wear it to work but that's only because my boss would be rather upset.) I have not found a good way to wear the Macabi Skirt while climbing; but that's probably for the best. Aside from climbing I have worn the Macabi Travel Skirt for all sorts of outdoor activities and I have asked a lot from the Macabi Skirt. For the last six months the Macabi Skirt has been up to the task. From rafting down the Kern River to camping in the High country, from dinner at Franklin Lake to Dinner at Nelda's Dinner and all the days in between. The Suplex fabric sloughs of dirt and mud very well. It is water resistant and will deflect small amounts of water very well. When I find myself chest deep in the river the fabric will soak through. However, it dries very quickly. I have also found that the Macabi Skirt is wind resistant. When a cool breeze kicks up I have found that the Macabi Skirt does a good job of blocking it. When it's cold a windy a pair of fleece pants under my Macabi Skirt makes for a warm combination on cold windy mornings. I have found that the Macabi Skirt also makes a great sun block. Even on hot days I can wear the skirt long for sun protection and still stay comfortable. In many ways the skirt is better than shorts, I get a sun block and good air circulation. It may just be me but is feels like my Macabi Skirt has just gotten softer and more comfortable the more I use it and wash it. There has been no fading or wear spots on my skirt. Somehow my Macabi Skirt has come clean every time in the wash and I don't have a single stain. I'm sure this is a fluke or perhaps just good fabric, but so far everything I've soiled the skirt with has come out in the wash. The belt loops are to small. None of the belts I wear in the wilderness will fit inside the belt loops. On the flip side I love the pockets. The pockets are large and hold their cargo well. People have not had the reaction I expected. Many of my friends found the Macabi Travel Skirt to be a great product and asked where they could get one. Most other people didn't even notice or at least they did not stare. I expected more reaction from people when they saw a man in a skirt. It was a pleasant surprise to find that most folks gave it no attention at all. I would like to thank Macabi Skirts and Backpackgeartest.org for allowing my the opportunity to test the Macabi Skirt. Now that the test period is over I think I'll order myself a few new skirts in different colors. That way I'll never have to worry about my only Macabi Skirt being in the wash.
