Flatworld Orikaso Solo Set
Long Term Report
November 19, 2006

Tea brewing in the Orikaso mug

Reviewer information

Name Marie-Noëlle Augendre I started backpacking nine years ago, day-hiking in Ile-de-France all year round, and doing several one or two-week trips in more mountainous regions (Corsica, Pyrénées, Cévennes, Lubéron, etc.) each year.

In the past three years, I have gradually lightened my pack load as I changed to a hammock, an alcohol stove, a light pack and running shoes instead of boots.

After living the most part of this year in Quebec (Canada), I'm just back to France and currently settling right in the middle of the Cévennes, an area that is positively criss-crossed with hiking trails.

This report is the closing one of a series of three:

  • for a complete description of the Orikaso Solo Set and my first impressions, please refer to my Initial Report
  • field testing during the first two-month period is related in my Field Report
  • this last report describes the last part of the test, and presents my conclusions regarding the Orikaso Solo Set after a four-month usage.

Once cleaned with a piece of bread, the unfolded bowl can be used as a plateTesting conditions

Due to my recent move back from Canada to France, I had no opportunity to backpack in the past two months, but I have made 5 or 6 day-hikes in the Cévennes area since I arrived there. I took advantage of some warm and sunny days to walk trails in chestnuts and pines forests, or more rocky tracks winding amid scrubs and bushes of holm oaks. Elevations were in the 1150-4920 ft (350-1500 m) range, temperatures at least 59°F (15°C) and sometimes up to 72°F (22°C) on sunny sides. Except for a couple of drizzles, I manage to avoid rain, but my feet did get wet a few times when I couldn't steer clear of some marshes.

Observations

In order to complete the test, I didn't bring the hot tea I usually have on day-hikes, but filled my bottle with hot water so I could prepare both soup and tea at lunch break in the field. I was happy to notice that my Deuter 25 daypack (1525 cu in/25 liters) was just wide enough to accommodate the Solo Set, that I packed between my back and the water bladder; the only other two things I had to add to my usual kit were a soup packet and a tea bag. As I have already said in my Field Report, I have no real use for the plate, and the bowl-and-mug make my very own set. As can be seen on the right picture, I have even managed to use the unfolded bowl as a kind of plate once I had cleaned it with a piece of bread.

Conclusion

I am very happy with the Orikaso Solo Set that is very light and easy to pack; the three pieces are easy to assemble and disassemble, very steady on uneven grounds, and couldn't be more easy to clean. The bowl and the mug on their own cover all my dishes needs for backpacking, and I intend to go on using them on a regular basis; the plate will see much less backpacking use, but I'll probably carry it when car or kayak-camping.

I would like to thank Flatworld and BackpackGearTest.org for giving me the opportunity to test the Orikaso Solo Set.
