Background:
My camping, hiking and backpacking experience has included trips
varying in length from one day hikes, to 2-week trips. My
experience hiking began with my father, when I was about 6 years
old. We hiked along the river pathways in northeastern Ohio and
western Pennsylvania. During cold weather, I backpack, hike, snow
shoe, cross-country ski, go ice fishing and winter camp with friends
and family. Although I am not an lightweight backpacker, I am
trying to `lighten up' and even have converted to using a hammock
while camping.
Impressions:
I have worn the Baffin boots dozens of times during the winter months.
They have been worn while shoveling snow, chipping ice, walking on
frozen lakes while ice fishing, snowmobiling and for walking around
outside of our cabin while camping. We had an extremely cold winter
this year, with temperatures dropping to -28 F (-33 C) for over 7
consecutive days (15 days total).
The boots were worn both in extremely cold weather and at times when
the temperature was more moderate but it was also wet out. The
Baffins are very comfortable, with no areas that rub uncomfortably on
my foot or leg. The hook and loop closures keep the boots closed
securely, and help keep snow and wetness away from my legs and feet.
The tread on the bottom of the boots provide adequate traction on
packed snow and ice. The insulation kept my legs warm, even while
standing still. I used the boots while ice fishing, hiking, walking
and while shoveling snow. They were well suited to all these tasks.
The boots are well constructed and continue to look fairly new. I had
worried that the outer material of the boots would tear or snag while
hiking. That did not occur, even when climbing through some rough
areas.
One of the aspects of these boots that I really liked was that even
after being outside and moving around for a while my feet never became
so warm that they perspired. While cabin camping it was nice to wake
up in the morning and slide my cold feet into the Baffins to warm up.
I enjoyed testing the boots, and found them extremely useful during
our cold winter. There is nothing really negative I would say about
the boots. They are relatively light weight, but they are 'bulky'.
The 'footprint' of the boots is wide, and did take some getting used
to.
Unfortunately, I did not have much of an opportunity to further test the
boots after my field report. I appreciate the opportunity to test
these boots and look forward to using them again next winter.
