Background:
I got bitten by the backpacking bug in 1994 when I was a volunteer at the Grand Canyon. My first backpacking trip was the same week I arrived, with gear borrowed from trail crew supplies. My husband and I enjoy car camping and backpacking (we use a double-wall tent), mostly in Michigan. We've pared down our pack weight a little (a necessity for a 12-night trip with no resupply), and we are continually re-working our gear list to cut weight without giving up the luxury items we enjoy (such as food that involves more than boiling water).

Basic Product Information

cruizer 10 (28K)

Manufacturer: Seattle Sports
Website: http://www.seattlesportsco.com
Product: LEDHedz Cruizer 10
MSRP: $7.95
Listed weight: 0.5 oz (14.2 g)
Weight as delivered: 0.5 oz (14.2 g) including keychain, 0.4 oz (11.3 g) without keychain
Batteries: two 3V CR 2025 lithium (included)

The Cruizer consists of the lamp body, a metal clip, a metal swivel, and metal keychain. The lamp has 2 settings: on and off, and is powered by two 3V CR 2025 lithium batteries which can be replaced. On the underside of the Cruizer, there is one small screw that holds the body together.

Field Testing

Please see my Initial Report and Field Report for detailed information about the Cruizer and its performance.

Since my field Report, I've had the Cruizer with me every day on my keychain, on a few dayhikes during evening/early night, and a couple of times while walking my dog at night. The light appears as bright as the day I received it, and the rubber button cover has remained firmly in place after I re-attached it after the one time it fell off (see my Field Report for details).

I've used the light in temperatures ranging from 20 F to 75 F (-7 C to 24 C), and in weather conditions from light snow to light rain to nights without precipitation. The above range of weather does not appear to affect the performance of the lamp. To simulate a heavier rain, I placed the Cruizer in my kitchen sink and sprayed it with the hose attachment for about 5 minutes, full blast. There was no water intrusion when I gave it this shower, and it also remained water-free when I dropped it into about a foot (0.3 m) of water for 15 seconds.

This light comes in handy whenever I need a little light without fumbling around for one of our other flashlights. I wouldn't use it as my primary light for backpacking trips since navigating uneven ground can be difficult with the narrow beam, but it works nicely as a reading light in camp and I plan to bring it on future trips as my backup light.

I would like to thank Seattle Sports and BackpackGearTest for the opportunity to test the Cruizer 10.
