Six Moon Designs

Starlite Pack

Ron Moak
September 20, 2004

My thanks to Backpack Gear Test reviewers for their qualitative reports of the Starlite Pack. Due to their speedy reporting, we were able to make several changes to the pack before being shipped out to customers.

While we fixed all critical problems with the existing packs, we're making some additional changes that will be reflected in our 2005 model. These packs will be available in November 2004.

The changes are designed to enhance the pack and make it even more usable and include:

Pack Fabric

  • Coated 210 Denier Dyneema Gridstop for the pack body - provides the greatest strength to weight ratio of any available fabric.
  • Coated 420 Denier Packcloth for pack bottom - provides improved abrasion resistance to critical areas.
  • 1.1 ounce Silicon Coated for the extension collar - provides a lighter fabric where durability and abrasion resistance is less critical.

Extension Collar

  • Improved Velcro - We're using a special molded hook Velcro that greatly reduces, if not eliminates, the problem of the hook grabbing on to items moving in and out of the pack.
  • Omni directional Buckle - This small lightweight buckle saves weight and eliminates the current unidirectional buckle.

Shoulder Straps

  • Wider Straps - We've widened the shoulder straps by .75 inches (to 2.75 inches) at the apex of the shoulders. This improves load carrying at maximum weights.
  • Metal Attachment Clips - These new metal clips provide a more secure attachment to the pack.
  • Redesigned Sternum Strap eliminates the tendency of the strap to become disengaged under some circumstances.

Compression

  • The bungee compression cord has been replaced by standard cording. This provides greater compression when carrying less volume.
