Term Report Name: Christine Korhonen Age: 32 Gender: female Height: 5' 4" (1.6 m) Weight: 150 lb (68 kg) E-mail: chris@wormguy.com Location: Western Montana Backpacking Background: I'm in Montana enjoying the summers and becoming re-acquainted with winter. Now that I'm back above the snow line, I'm attempting some winter camping and snowshoeing. I'm a lightweight backpacker mentally, if not always in practice. My full summer pack weight is around 19 lb (9 kg) with a tent, but my winter pack hovers around 25 lb (11 kg) with food and water for one night. Product Information: Manufacturer: Integral Designs URL: www.integraldesigns.com Item: eVENT Rain Pants MSRP: US $250 Color: Black Size: Large
Listed Weight - medium: 10.5 oz (298 g) Measured Weight - large: 10.8 oz (306 g) eVENT Rain Pants Description: The Integral Designs eVENT Rain Pants are an outer layer made from nylon eVENT. They are advertised as a waterproof and breathable. Field Conditions: I tested the eVENT Rain Pants while skiing, snowshoeing, and backpacking in Montana and Wyoming. Elevations ranged from 4500' to 6500' (1400 m to 2000 m). Daytime temperatures went from 10 F to 45 F (-12 C to 7 C). Conditions were sunny to overcast with light snow and winds up to 20 mph (32 km/h). Fit: I've worn the eVENT Rain Pants over either a thin wool baselayer or with a base layer and nylon Gramicci hiking pants. The rain pants are extremely light, fit well, and provide plenty of room for movement, even while sleeping. I haven't noticed any discomfort from the inside seams or tags. In fact, these pants are very comfortable. Once I put them on, I forget I'm wearing them. The pants are quite stylish. I have no problems wearing them to and from the trail in restaurants and stores. They do wrinkle some when left in a pack or stuff sack, but since I wore the pants continuously when out in the woods, I didn't pack them at all and they remained wrinkle-free. Waterproof/Breathability: I haven't had any problems in the field with these pants wetting out. I experienced more snow than rain, and any snow just slid right off. The pants stayed so dry that I was able to wear them in my sleeping bag whenever I needed another layer. The pants also have excellent breathability and wind resistance. My legs never felt overheated. I stayed more comfortable in these pants than I have in any other rain pants. Pockets/Belt loops: These pants do not have pockets themselves, but have zippered openings that allow access to pockets in the pants worn underneath. The baselayers I wore underneath don't have pockets, so I didn't use these openings at all. I also didn't use the belt loops. I found the adjustable Velcro fasteners sufficient, and I didn't need a belt. Durability: In my field report I mentioned mysterious holes that appeared on the ankle of my pants after my first use. I still don't know how I made those holes, but they haven't gotten any bigger. I haven't made any additional holes. Other than those holes, the pants look like new. I've washed them five times so far. The elastic in the waistband is holding up well, and the Velcro fasteners are looking good. There are no stains or frayed areas. Summary: These pants meet all of my qualifications for rain pants: light, fit well, and keep the wet out. I will be wearing these pants for many seasons to come. Likes Nice and light Comfortable Keep out the wet on the trail Dislikes Mysterious holes Thanks to Integral Designs for having this test and BackpackGearTest for allowing me to be a part.
