Biography:  I’ve been backpacking for 11 years, usually with my husband.  We used to be heavyweights, but having children forced us to go lighter, and now on my own my 3-season base weight (without food, water or fuel) hovers around 13 lb/6 kg.  On family trips the weight usually doubles. I make some of our gear. My typical haunts are the mountains of southern California, the Sierra Nevada, the Grand Canyon, plus the Mojave and Colorado deserts.  Yup, gotta carry a lot of water.

Product Description:  A roll-top dry-bag with a compression valve at the bottom left side (when looking at the bag's logo side) and slots at the bottom corners which allow webbing or thin cord to be passed through.  The bottom of the bag is neither rounded or squared off, rather it is just seamed across.  The end result is that the bag will not stand up on its own when full (or when empty, for that matter).  It is a bright orange, the only color offered in this style.  Here is an excerpt from POE's product description: "We kept all the features of our benchmark Pneumo dry bags; welded construction, roll top closure, compression purge/fill valve, and added weight savings with the introduction of a new 40Dx30D ripstop fabric and a refined closure."

Field Conditions:   For the first time in my history with BackpackGearTest, I have tested an item internationally!  Testing has ranged from southern California (local mountains and along the coastline) to Montana and Canada (Waterton Lakes National Park).  Elevations have topped out over 10,000 ft/3048 m, and temperatures have ranged from roughly 40 F / 4 C to over 100 F / 38 C.  Weather has been mostly clear and dry.

Performance:  Although the Pneumo Ltw is an effective dry bag, handling dunks in both salt and fresh water with no apparent leaks, it has turned out to be most valuable to me as a compression sack.  As I noted in my Field Report, the Ltw allows me to compress bulky items (sleeping bags, fleece/pile clothing, down-filled gear) into compact, flat packages.  This is primarily due to the air valve found at the bottom of the bag - I can open the valve, stuff the bag, roll & seal the top closure, then squeeze out as much air as I physically can (I have resorted to lying down on the bag) and close the valve.

The Pneumo Ltw has held up well under my mostly non-abusive testing.  I even had to scrape leeches off of it at one point, and it still looks almost new.  The air valve has never failed or stuck, and the only time I ever had any water get in through the top closure was on my first test use, when I suspect I didn't roll it up properly.  At one point, frustrated by the boringness of my testing (nothing especially challenging happened to it), I chucked it into the rocky shallows of a lake and stood on it for fifteen minutes (not easy, as the air inside kept shifting away from the pressure of my feet).  When I was done, it floated right back up, with no leaks at all.  Its very bright color also makes it easy to locate if by some chance it's been dropped into the water.

So the Pneumo Ltw is a solid, reliable dry bag.  It's also a great compression sack, due to the air valve feature.  It also makes a decent, slightly noisy air pillow, especially if you aren't a restless sleeper (again, the air will shift away from the pressure exerted by your head).  Many thanks to both POE and BackpackGearTest.org for the chance to test the Pneumo Ltw Dry-Bag.
