AGE: 36
LOCATION: Woodstock, Vermont, USA
GENDER: M
HEIGHT: 5' 9" (1.75 m)
WEIGHT: 155 lb (70.30 kg)

My backpacking experience began six years ago. While most trips are for two or three days, I have taken week long trips a few times. I am aware of pack weight but it is not my primary concern. I strive for enjoyable outings with functional and reliable gear. My hiking usually takes me into woodland mountainous terrain. I have spent the night in all but snowy conditions. But I enjoy day hiking throughout the year in all conditions.

Product Description:
The X Bowl is collapsible bowl made of a rigid food grade nylon base and flexible food grade silicone walls. The manufacture states the bowl is dishwasher and microwave safe as well as BPA-free. The bowl is available in four colors; orange, blue, red and green but the base is black for all four color options. The base of the bowl is cut resistant and can be used for cutting food. On the base is the company logo, country of origin and four symbols. Based on the manufacture's description I interpret the symbols to mean food grade, temperature resistant to -40 C (-40 F), temperature resistant to 180 C (356 F), dishwasher safe and microwave safe. I would not have understood the last two symbols by just looking at the bowl. The X Bowl is formed by three concentric rings of flexible silicone that fold into each other with the innermost ring attaching to the nylon base. When the rings are pulled away from the base they unfold creating a bowl. On the inside of the bowl are measuring increments of 100 ml (3.4 fl oz ), 150 ml (5 fl oz ), 250 ml (8.5 fl oz ), and 500 ml (17 fl oz ). The measurements prove accurate when compared to fluid measurements of a standard Nalgene bottle.

FIELD USE

I purchased the X Bowl (hereafter referred to as the bowl) three months ago and have used it for a total of six days. I was looking for something to eat out of while boiling a second batch of water. I had a few criteria; light weight, packable, durable, easy to clean and affordable. I used the bowl on three separate trips with temperatures ranging from 40 F (4 C) to 80 F (26 C). The bowl's ability to collapse to such a low profile allows it to easily fit into my cook kit. When ready for use as a bowl the X Bowl easily and quickly unfolds. One of my first meals eaten in the X Bowl was oatmeal. The measurement markers inside the bowl were used to add the correct amount of water. After adding the prepared hot oatmeal to the bowl I did not notice any unusual odors or taste. The X Bowl cleaned up easy enough with some water and light scrapping with a spork. The only problematic areas to clean are the four creases inside the bowl. Another meal eaten in the X Bowl was couscous with green onions and cherry tomatoes. I used the bottom of the bowl as a cutting board to chop the veggies. The manufacture recommends fully collapsing the bowl before use as a cutting board. I need to look closely to see any wear to the surface of the black nylon base of the bowl.

The X Bowl meets all my needs for an eating container. The added functions of measuring cup and cutting board are a bonus.
