INITIAL IMPRESSIONS

The glasses came in a Ryders box that included the Intersect sunglasses with grey lenses installed, two additional sets of lenses (in a protective case), a hard case (zipper closure), and a fabric pouch/lens cleaner (closes by drawstring).

The glasses that arrived are exactly as described on the specifications sheet provided by the Ryders representative.

Ryders Tag
Ryders Eyewear

The glasses arrived with no scratches or other defects. A small tag with the MSRP was attached to the right arm of the glasses. There was a small plastic label on the left lens with the message "Includes 3 sets of lenses." Both the tag and the label came off with no issues.

The glasses did not come with directions for lens care or with directions to swap lenses. Each lens has three notches across the top and one notch on the temple side. After a couple of attempts to remove the grey lenses, I was able to spread the arch and remove the lens. I found that when I placed the notch on the temple side of the frame and rotated the lens into place, they would fit into place with an audible "snap." Although I attempted to keep my fingers on the edge of the lenses during installation, I observed smears on the lenses. The soft case cleaned the smears off with no streaks. I will report on the different light levels in which I used the three sets of lenses and what conditions I found best for each set.

The two sets of additional lenses came in a lens case. This case consists of two pockets separated by a piece of fabric. There are hook and loop fasteners at the top of the lens case to hold the lenses in place. The lens case is secured into the hard case by an additional hook and loop fastener. The hook and loop fasteners are sewn in place. I will report on the durability of the case.

After adjusting the nose guard, the glasses fit snugly across my face. I could see only a little bit of the blue frames around the bridge of my nose, but I was not distracted by this. The wrap style of the glasses gave my eyes coverage to the edge of my visual peripheral field. The glasses stayed in place as I swiveled my head. The rubber on the nose guard and on the bottoms of the arms felt comfortable. I will report if this is still the case after extended wear on the trail.

SUMMARY

As someone who tries to take care of his eyes, I find sunglasses a must. I almost always use them in the backcountry to protect against not only the sun, but also branches.

I am concerned about the feasibility of changing out the lenses on the trail and the lack of instructions on how to best change out the lenses. There were also no recommendations on what light levels to wear each type of lens.

Overall, I like the weight and feel of the glasses. I think that they look good on me.

This concludes my Initial Report. The Field Report will be amended to this report in approximately two months from the date of this report. Please check back then for further information.

I would like to thank Ryders Eyewear and BackpackGearTest.org for allowing me to participate in this test.
